Exploding Myths About Learning Through Gaming

Nonacademic Skills Are Key To Success
  • Half the picture of student success is something other than academic. But no one agrees on what to call that  "other stuff". As Noah Webster, the great American lexicographer and educator, put it back in 1788, "The virtues of men are of more consequence to society than their abilities; and for this reason, the heart should be cultivated with more assiduity than the head." 
  • So, in Webster's tradition, here's a short glossary of terms that are being used for that cultivation of the heart: 21st Century Skills; Character; Grit; Growth Mindset; Noncognitive Traits and Habits; Social and Emotional Skills; and Soft Skills.

How Should We Learn?
  • When pundits describe data in the 21st century, they often resort to the flood metaphor, describing how we are “inundated” or “awash” with data. It is true that the internet has given us almost unlimited and practically free access to the sum of all human knowledge in a way never before seen in history. Yet, we feel so overwhelmed by all of this. 
  • Data is not knowledge however, and knowledge is not wisdom. The rhetoric around online education has focused so much on skills, credentials, and mechanisms of accountability that we have mostly neglected building up the more fundamental skill of simply learning what information is invaluable, merely valuable, and useless in a field. That is why we need to develop thinkers, not information processors.

Defining "Best Practice" in Teaching
  • It's often said in the teaching world "Why reinvent the wheel when there are plenty of practices that already work?". We teachers are standing on  the shoulders of giants who developed tried-and-true strategies by testing them out, reflecting on the outcomes, and honing those strategies over decades or longer.
  • In their book, Professional Capital: Transforming Teaching in Every School, Andy Hargreaves and Michael Fullan share their definition for "best practices," which they define as existing practices that already possess a high level of widely-agreed effectiveness.

Why Blogging Is Key to the Future of Higher Ed
Campus Technology
  • A massive experiment at Virginia Commonwealth University involving 7,000 blogs could lead to a new view on how college students learn. One goal for the Richmond, VA, campus was to eventually get as many of its 30,000 students as possible blogging and tweeting regularly about their schoolwork. 
  • The technology will not only help students to make connections about what they're learning, but will also function as an e-portfolio, documenting their work. In turn, administrators hope this will lead to an institution-wide cultural change, as students do more of their work on public platforms, work collaboratively with each other and respond to each other's work online and with digital tools.

On Student-Centered Pedagogy and Technology: An Interactive Long-Table Discussion
  • A recent interactive long-table discussion on student-centered pedagogy that was moderated by Cathy Davidson and Katina Rogers, with Michael Dorsch, Danica Savonick, and Lisa Tagliaferri, offered up successful case studies from their own classrooms.
  • I found the sharing of pedagogical strategies and effective activities most useful and I want to share some of those ideas and invite you to try some of them in your classroom next semester. The most important thing that I took away from the session was the importance of innovation, in whatever form that might be.
