  • Technology may not replace teachers, but teachers who integrate technology as a catalyst for learning will probably replace teachers who do not. Think about that for a moment.
  • As teachers, we get older while our students stay the same age. Therefore, we must adapt or become irrelevant! Effective technology integration is no longer an expectation, it’s required. No longer is it acceptable to limit our students to what one teacher knows and is able to do. Teachers must take responsibility for their own learning rather than waiting for a few designated professional development days each year.

Arizona State and edX Will Offer Online Freshman Year Through MOOCs

  • Arizona State University, in partnership with edX, this fall will begin to offer credit-bearing massive open online courses at a fraction of the cost of either in-person or traditional online education.
  • By fall 2016, ASU anticipates it will offer enough MOOCs so that students can complete their entire freshman year online through what edX and the university are calling the Global Freshman Academy. "There are no admissions requirements -- no SAT scores, no GPAs, no recommendation letters,” edX CEO Anant Agarwal said in an interview.

'Most Likely To Succeed': Schools Should Teach Kids To Think, Not Memorize

Wearable Teaching? College to Experiment With Apple Watch as Learning Tool
The Chronicle of Higher Education
  • On Monday researchers at Pennsylvania State University’s main campus announced that they would be among the first to test the device’s usefulness in the classroom. The experiment will begin this summer, with eight Apple Watches the university purchased for the project.
  • "What we’re looking at in this particular research is how can we use wearable technologies like the Apple Watch to help students think about and reflect about how they learn," said Kyle Bowen, director of education-technology services at Penn State.

What If Students Could Fire Their Professors?
  • A bill in the Iowa state Senate would rate professors' performance based just on student evaluations. Low-rated professors would be automatically fired — no tenure, no appeals. Research suggests that's not such a good idea.
  • The bill's author, state Sen. Mark Chelgren, argues that too many students are taking on student loan debt but not getting their money's worth in the classroom. "Professors need to understand that their customers are those students," Chelgren told the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Gamification: Engaging Students With Narrative
  • What defines a game is having a goal or objective. However almost all games also have some sort of theme or story. What we learn from games is that adding narrative, storyline, a theme, or fun graphics to our lessons and activities can help students be more engaged. To get started, try including a paragraph with each assignment that tells a little story.
