A new undergraduate program at the University of California, Berkeley, wants to launch “the future tech leaders who will create real-world impact in a future that we cannot even see today.”
“Our industry partners tell us they face a significant gap in their search for talent – those with technical backgrounds need the expertise to bring a great idea to market, while those with business backgrounds must have a stronger grasp of the technologies that drive innovation,” said S. Shankar Sastry, dean of Berkeley Engineering, when launching the program. “We want to close this gap.”
The Management, Entrepreneurship, & Technology Program (M.E.T.), will be taught at Berkeley’s top-ranked Haas School of Business and College of Engineering. The M.E.T. integrated curriculum consists of liberal arts, engineering and business courses and can be completed in four years, in the hopes of developing “leaders with an integrated mindset and tools to address our largest challenges and opportunities,” said Rich Lyons, dean of Berkeley-Haas.
Each class will be small, about 30 students at first, allowing for close mentoring relationships. Over 2,500 high school seniors applied for the 30 spots in M.E.T., reported Melia Robinson from Business Insider, making it more selective than Harvard, MIT, and Stanford.
Michael Grimes, one of Silicon Valley’s most influential dealmakers and UC Berkeley alumnus, sees M.E.T. as a tech industry pipeline. ”It looks like it is going to be the most elite tech leader factory there is,” said Grimes.
