The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is partnering with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) to support and build the platform bioRxiv, to help scientists share research faster.
The free service provide by bioRxiv enables life science researchers to share drafts of their papers — known as preprints — before they appear in journals. Preprints have been a mainstay of the scientific process for decades in math and computer science and now, bioRxiv is quickly becoming the standard database for pre-publishing biological research. “Expanded access to these drafts can dramatically accelerate the pace of discovery, and in turn, our understanding of health and disease,” said Cori Bargmann, president of science at Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chang are looking to build a better world for children with the help of science and education. In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg writes about the importance of accelerating scientific publishing: “It can take a year or longer to publish research in a scientific journal. It’s common for scientists to be working on a problem for a long time and then when another paper finally publishes, they realize someone solved their problem or found a better approach a long time ago. It can be a huge waste of time, and if we can help eliminate it, scientific progress can move a lot faster.”
CSHL and CZI are committed to optimize communication infrastructure in science. All software developed through this collaboration will be made available as open source.
