A survey shows that leaders of the information security industry think that the digital security skills gap is a challenge for organizations and their defense strategies.
A survey commissioned by the company Tripwire shows that leaders of the information security industry think that the digital security skills gap is a challenge for organizations and their defense strategies.
Over 315 IT security professionals at companies with over 100 employees participated in the study. Ninety-three percent said they were concerned about the security skills gap, and 81% think that security skills have changed in the past years.
“72 percent of security professionals say that it’s more difficult now to hire adequately skilled security personnel than it was two years ago.”
Tim Erlin, vice president of product management and strategy at Tripwire, said that security teams are evolving, but training and staff are not keeping up with the pace.
“While the makeup of the cybersecurity workforce may be changing, the fundamentals of protecting an organization have not. It will be critical during this transition to ensure there’s a long-term strategy in place around maintaining the foundational security controls,” said Erlin.
Companies are getting the security skills outside: 91 percent of respondents said that they were outsourcing, while 98 percent said that they expect non-security staff to become more involved in cybersecurity.
According to some predictions, there will be a global shortage of two million digital security professionals by 2019 and every year 40,000 cybersecurity jobs go unfilled.
