  • President Obama abandoned his two-year effort to have the government create a system that explicitly rates the quality of the nation’s colleges and universities, a plan that was bitterly opposed by presidents of many elite private colleges, saying it could force schools to prioritize money-making majors.
  • Instead, the White House unveiled a website that does not attempt to rate schools with any kind of grade, but provides information to prospective students and their parents about annual costs, graduation rates and salaries after graduation.
  • Mr. Obama praised the new website saying that by using the new College Scorecard, “You’ll be able to see how much each school’s graduates earn, how much debt they graduate with, and what percentage of a school’s students can pay back their loan.”

  • Forget MOOCS, say technology investors. What higher education institutions should invest in are personalized learning platforms that provide simple data on outcomes. 
  • “The last major technology innovation that truly disrupted the higher education model was the lecture, and that happened in medieval times,” said Daniel Pianko, a partner at University Ventures. “Innovation in higher education moves slowly.”
  • However, the market is about to change. “Technology does two things,” said Donn Davis, founder and partner of Revolution Growth, “it makes things cheaper and it makes things better. And like no other time before, institutions will need to rely on innovative technology to make their ‘product’ cheaper and better.”
  • There are four characteristics of a good ed tech investment: It includes mass-market technology components; It should be independently tested; It should have great branding and distribution; and it isn’t too innovative.

TSUS Joins ‘Freshman Year for Free’ Program
The Texas State University System
  • The Texas State University System announced a partnership with the not-for-profit Modern States Education Alliance that could help students earn up to one full year of college credit tuition-free, reducing the cost of a degree by up to 25 percent. TSUS is the first public university system in Texas to partner with Modern States’ ‘Freshman Year for Free’ program.
  • The program, available to students in fall 2016, will offer more than 30 top quality online college courses at no cost, along with free online texts and materials. These courses are under development through edX.

MIT’s Plan to Inspire the Next Generation of Bitcoin Innovators

  • In recent years, there has been a lot of enthusiasm for how cryptocurrencies will create new platforms, markets, and economies. But what will the future of commerce look like? The MIT’s Media Lab and the Digital Currency Initiative is hoping to bring a balanced approach to imagining the future of commerce. 
  • The MIT's Media Lab is now offering two courses: The Future of Commerce will explore how blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum disrupt existing markets and financial services. The other course, Blockchain Technologies, is a deep technical dive into the blockchain technology behind Bitcoin and other digital currencies. 
  • Brian Forde, director of MIT’s Digital Currency Initiative, wagers that the future CEO, the "Bitcoin CEO", will have to understand cryptography, data, privacy, computer science, economics, monetary policy, design, and various other topics.

Why Higher Ed Needs to Step Up Its IT Security Game

  • With all of the personal, financial and healthcare data collected on students, faculty, administration and staff, all conveniently housed at a single source, IT security is becoming an increasingly important topic on higher education, a especially vulnerable sector when it comes to cybersecurity.
  • Jane LeClair, chief operating officer at the National Cybersecurity Institute at Excelsior College in Washington, DC, stressed the need for higher education to step up its game around IT security. And she urged colleges and universities that haven't already done so to embrace the role of the chief information security officer, or CISO.
  • "The CISO is an evolving and increasingly challenging role. The individual is responsible for all security-related matters, including regulatory compliance, risk management, technology controls, disaster recovery and, more importantly, raising the awareness of security," said LeClair.

MIT Ranks High in Bad Security at Major Universities

  • One of the most prestigious schools in information technology also ranks first among the worst in information security, according to a recent security survey of 485 colleges and universities around the world.
  • The assessment, performed by the information security assessment company SecurityScorecard, gave MIT a nearly failing grade, putting the school in the basement below New Mexico State University and Cambridge University.

University of Salford Launches Tinder-style App to Match Students With Perfect Course

  • Searching for the perfect university course can seem a bit like finding the perfect soulmate. But one university has sought to alleviate the stress of the hunt by launching a mobile phone app aimed at helping students find "the course of their dreams."
  • The course app, Match Made in Salford, has much in common with Tinder. It allows prospective students to swipe left or right when they are provided with personalised course recommendations based on their grades achieved, preferred subject areas and careers of interest. The university said more than 10,000 people have used the matchmaker to find courses so far.
