Various types of alternative credentials like nanodegrees, microcredentials, and digital badging have gone mainstream outside of academia. They are a visual, verifiable proof of a candidate's skillsets.
Institutions are exploring partnerships with other colleges and universities where modular content and skills assessments are done in an à la carte fashion.
Georgia Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, the University of Washington, University of California’s Davis, Irvine and Los Angeles campuses, and the University of Wisconsin Extension are some of the universities that have kicked off such a collaborative effort.
Eighty leading colleges and universities announced a plan to reverse a decades-long process by which colleges have made their applications increasingly similar. The new group is called the Coalition for Access, Affordability and Success.
The colleges and universities are creating new online portfolios for high school students, designed to have ninth graders begin thinking more deeply about what they are learning or accomplishing in high school.
The group is integrated by every Ivy League university, Stanford University and the University of Chicago; and leading public institutions such as the Universities of Michigan, North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Virginia. The 80 members expect more institutions to join.

Findings from the Gallup-Purdue Index -- a study of more than 30,000 college graduates -- revealed the "Big Six" college experiences that increase the odds that graduates will be engaged at work.
Given that a full 25% of all college graduates in the U.S. missed the mark on all of the big six experiences, it seems that higher education institutions aren't optimizing the college experience. It is time to look beyond grades, test scores and resumes.
