In the latest episode of the EduTrends Webcast, Matt Sigelman, President of the Burning Glass Institute, shares why educators must rethink how they design programs and assessment. With over a third of job skills changing every five years, Sigelman emphasizes that skills, not job titles, are the true currency of the labor market. He describes the labor market as a dynamic system where jobs evolve by absorbing skills from different domains. As an example, today’s data scientists don’t just need technical expertise, they must blend coding, analytics, and business skills to solve real-world problems. These insights underline the urgency for universities to move beyond static curricula and begin mapping educational programs to emerging workforce needs.
Sigelman also calls on higher education institutions to become lifelong learning partners. Instead of treating degrees as endpoints, he urges universities to design flexible pathways that adapt to learners’ needs across their careers.
