According to Gartner’s report 2018 CIO Agenda: Higher Education Industry Insights, 59% higher education CIOs think there will be a significant business model change due to the digital transformation process. The firm states that CIOs recognize that the top priorities are enrollment and student success, but they are failing to innovate and implement new technologies.

“Higher education CIOs ranked digital business/digital transformation as the fifth most strategic business priority. However, when it comes to the top technology areas these institutions are investing in to differentiate themselves, digitalization/digital marketing ranks only eighth amongst higher education respondents, compared to second across all industries.”

The survey collected data from 3,160 chief information officers in 98 countries across major industries, among them higher education. In a news release, Gartner analyzed the responses of leaders from only this sector.

Jan-Martin Lowendahl, vice president of Gartner, said that higher education is one of the least digitized industries. “Considering that higher education is, in principle, an ‘information’ industry with huge digital potential compared to other industries, digitalization needs to become a top priority.”
