The online platform Coursera, dedicated to massive online courses since its founding in 2012, has become a powerful tool for universities around the world during the current health crisis. Since the launch of its Initiative in Response to the Coronavirus, where any higher education institution was granted free access to the Coursera online learning system, more than 2600 institutions have joined this educational community. Terik Tidwell, Managing Director of the Smith Tech Center of Innovation of Johnson C Smith University, mentions, “Coursera is helping us bring up our virtual programs quickly while maintaining the integrity and quality of the program.”

The higher the demand for the use of this service, the greater is the need for educational institutions to identify the subjects within Coursera that best match their catalog of courses. This pairing process, done manually, can become tedious because, within the educational platform, there are more than 3900 courses and specializations from which to choose.

This is why Coursera launched a new solution, CourseMatch. This new machine learning system manages to recognize among its vast number of online courses those that are the most similar to ones provided on particular university campuses. One of the most valuable features is the ability of CourseMatch to analyze educational catalogs in more than 100 languages and redirect them to courses in the same variety of languages. In addition, for each subject analyzed, the platform proposes the five most outstanding offerings of different subjects with their respective levels of relevance. Such is the diversity offered that they have managed to link about 2.6 million subjects belonging to universities around the world.

At the moment, CourseMatch results are only available to 1800 universities and colleges in the United States and India for selected curricula of AICTE. If a university is not already included, the administrators can request that their catalog be mapped and included in this machine learning system. To request it, send a CSV using this template to the Coursera Data Science team at coursematch@coursera.org.

Coursera invites the use of its online courses to support the schools during their process of transformation to online learning. Thus, users can benefit from the most crucial elements in the educational system while dealing with the COVID-19 crisis, namely, plurality, integrity, and above all, solidarity.
