Immersive learning with extended reality and adaptive learning were the most prominent educational strategies in 2022 in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (EMCS) at Tecnologico de Monterrey. Would you like to know how these strategies potentiated the learning experiences of students in the area of Medicine? Although technology is vital in teaching, the teachers led the implementation and transfer of technological resources to improve their students’ learning.

The use of technologies implies a process of reflection to establish the appropriate technological resource to facilitate students’ acquisition of knowledge or its assessment. With this objective, the EMCS designed and implemented 30 educational projects directly related to educational and digital innovation, with the valuable participation of 114 teachers who taught 20 training units, thus benefiting more than 9,100 student subjects with new and enriching training experiences.

Strategic projects highlighted in 2022

During this year, the educational innovation projects of the EMCS aimed for more use and development of spaces in the metaverse of the institution and mixed reality for the practice of specific processes; additionally, the adaptive learning incursion ventured a variety of content that would facilitate students’ learning of their training units.

Two of the most prominent initiatives were the following:

  1. Strategy of immersive learning with extended reality
As part of the immersive learning initiative with technology, EMCS created a metaverse where students applied and developed knowledge and skills in real and/or experiential, active, and flexible virtual environments, depending on their professional and personal needs. The first programs that participated in this initiative were Surgeon (implemented) and Medical Dental Surgeon (in development).

  2. Strategy of adaptive learning
EMCS developed two courses employing adaptive learning while implementing the Tec21 Educational Model: “The Biology of the Human Cell” and “Biostructures: the Origin of Life.” Leveraging the benefits of this strategy in hybrid and online environments, the courses offered students resources in different formats and learning paths to guide their studies for a more individualized experience suiting their needs and preferences.
