The debate about the intervention of Artificial Intelligence(AI) in the arts and communications disciplines has taken the conversation in content producer communities by storm. There is no consensus yet on the ethical impact of using AI to replace artistic and human communication work, nor what it represents for the future of the labor market. However, we do know that this new use of technology will require developing skills that machines cannot replicate.

For years, there has been talking of a possible change in the skillsets valued by employers when artificial intelligence is improved. “Certain jobs will be automated, but at the same time, AI will offer new opportunities for companies to create value, give rise to new jobs and change the emphasis on the types of skills employers will need to thrive,” commented Rachel Russell, Director of Corporate Marketing Strategy for the Aegis Group in 2021. The prediction was accurate. Today human skills and soft skills (or power skills, as they have been recently rebranded) are the most crucial differentiator in staying current. What are the most valuable skills in 2023? Here are some of the most sought-after.

Seven most valuable human skills in 2023

1. Digital literacy

Digital literacy means understanding the skills required to work and navigate the digital world. It consists of the optimal use of software devices and applications in day-to-day office work. Companies need people who can communicate and collaborate easily using technological resources, keep up with the newest technologies, and understand the impact these tools can have on their work and professional field.

2. Creativity

The willingness to generate new ideas, imagine beyond the status quo and understand how this process influences creating and implementing solutions to improve project execution will be critical in the offices of the future. A creative worker is likelier to produce ideas that address problems that come with new occurrences, such as remote work and emerging technologies.

3. Adaptability

After more than three years of the pandemic, one of the most important lessons is that change is inevitable and that we will not always be able to choose when and how it arrives. The professionals who develop the mental resilience to navigate all these changes efficiently, leverage them, and learn from them will be invaluable resources for all companies in any field.

4. Critical Thinking

Critical thinking consists of analyzing information and situations and valuing evidence and verifiable data over hearsay and opinions. This skill has become necessary at all educational and professional levels in an age where content bubbles, biased articles, and fake news dominate digital spaces. It is a critical aid to effective decision-making.

5. Leadership

Leadership will not be exclusively a requirement for team leaders in 2023. The evolution of the organizational climate points to more distributed groupings, project work, diverse groups, and greater horizontality in labor relations. Exercising leadership values, such as motivating, inspiring, and supporting team members, no matter their position on the organization chart, will be crucial in the near future.

6. Communication

Always a core skill in the workforce, communication will take on a more critical role in a post-pandemic world where remote work has led teams to find new ways to collaborate. From writing e-mails to analyzing and understanding non-verbal language in meetings, communication skills will be decisive for successful group work.

7. Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to identify, understand and manage your emotions and identify and empathize with others. It helps build and maintain better working relationships, translating into better results in project management since it reduces the difficulty of human work through knowledge and managing emotions and those of team members.
