The 31st Monterrey International Book Fair (FIL) will be held at Cintermex from October 7 to 15, 2023, in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. FIL Monterrey is a platform that aims to make culture more accessible. It brings together the whole community to promote and encourage broad reading and contribute to human flourishing. The event is for the public of all ages, including infants, youth, adults, and seniors. Tecnologico de Monterrey organizes the FIL, helped by the Government of Nuevo Leon, banks, companies, and publishers that promote culture in the State.

The Monterrey FIL is the most important cultural project in Northern Mexico. Annually, it receives an impressive flow of attendees, including participating publishers and guest authors, and offers various educational and recreational activities. The FIL contains multitudinous books and educational material with different themes, disciplines, styles, authors, and publishers. You can also enjoy activities such as book presentations, master classes, book signings, conferences, children’s shows, concerts, and even a folkloric dance show!

This year’s FIL is significant because it occurs during Tecnologico de Monterrey’s 80th anniversary, a celebration with various knowledge-related activities and Tec’s commitment to society. Like every year, the 2023 event has a guest of honor: the UANL (Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon), a prestigious house of studies celebrating its 90th anniversary in the State.

FIL Monterrey 2023

Events Agenda

The FIL agenda has been carefully crafted to satisfy the most demanding public seeking a space for learning, culture, and creativity at the national and international levels. The Alfonso Reyes Chair will be sponsoring figures who contribute to knowledge and intellectual curiosity, for example, the Spanish physicist Javier Santaolalla, a widely accepted, renowned science popularizer among adolescents and children through social networks. Another sharing her work is the American poet Tracy Smith, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2011 and was recognized as poet laureate from 2017 to 2019. Also, the Franco-Italian philosopher Giulia Sissa will talk about her book The Power of Women, and the multi-awarded Spanish writer Marina Parezagua will teach a literary creation workshop and share her most recent poetry.

Events will honor a broad contribution to culture, such as the tribute to Gabriel Zaid, one of the Hispanic American intellectuals who has reflected greatly on culture, particularly on books, the publishing industry, democracy, progress, power, and reading. The tributes and participation will include some of the most recognized intellectuals of our country, such as Enrique Krauze, Cristopher Domínguez, and Malva Flores, among others. Similarly, the FIL will celebrate the dramaturgical work of Sabina Berman, one of the most translated and represented writers internationally.

The conferences can be enjoyed in person and online through live broadcasts via the Alfonso Reyes Chair Facebook page.

Children and young people at the Monterrey 2023 FIL

Through the Youth Program for middle and high school students, FIL Monterrey proposes 25 meetings with writers of interest to these attendees, such as Raquel Castro, Andrés Acosta, Verónica Murguía, Jaime Alfonso Sandoval, Bernardo Fernández BEF, and the promoters of language and literature on TikTok, Magali T. Ortega (@nenamonstruo), Rodrigo Unda (@cartasdeunlector), and Adrián Chávez (@nochaveznada), among other guests.

For the little ones, the Nuevo Leon Ministry of Culture will offer the Children’s Pavilion entitled “To the Future and Beyond,” with activities and workshops for reflection on the construction of possible or desirable futures. The Pavilion’s offerings promote children’s literary reflection and imagination, guided by values such as sustainability, environmental education, ethics, peace, justice, and coexistence in diversity.

Tecnologico de Monterrey Schools at FIL 2023

The Tecnologico de Monterrey Schools’ contribution to the knowledge and advancement of the disciplines is worth mentioning. For example, the School of Social Sciences and Government and the School of Engineering will offer four conferences related to topics such as the upcoming presidential elections in Mexico, knowledge-based food with a sustainable approach, the roles of women who are redefining the world, and nature as technological inspiration, among other activities, such as panels and book presentations. Likewise, the School of Architecture, Art, and Design will host a conference on the triple climate, social, and political crises as essential elements of the urban predicaments experienced in different nations worldwide.

For this and more, you cannot miss attending the FIL 2023. This event is a contribution of high significance by Tecnologico de Monterrey and its sponsors that impacts the cultural and social well-being of thousands of families and professionals in northeastern Mexico. Admission is free.

Special thanks to Dr. Ana Laura Santamaría, leader of the Alfonso Reyes Chair, and Dr. Susana Ruiz, responsible for the children and adolescents agenda at the FIL, for their dedication and commitment to this great event for the public.
