As every year, Times Higher Education unveiled its university rankings of BRICS nations and emerging economies. On this occasion, Chinese universities excel, and a couple of Latin American institutions occupy distinguished ranks. From Mexico, Tec de Monterrey and UNAM share the 68th place –both perceived as the most recognized universities in the country.
In addition to conquering seven of the top ten places, China occupies seven more among the fifty best educational institutions in this segment. Analysts estimate that it is possible that China’s improvement is the result of its Double First Class University Project, which started in 2015, whose goal is to have world-class universities and disciplines by the end of the year 2050.

Highlighted Latin American universities
Again, Brazilian University of São Paulo stands out in 14th position, followed by the State University of Campinas and Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro that place 33rd and 61st respectively. In turn, the Pontifical University of Chile ranks 67th, followed by the Mexican Tecnológico de Monterrey and UNAM, tied at the 68th spot.
It is worth noting that some institutions rose considerably in position thanks to their efforts in quality research and the good reputation of their teaching. Conversely, other institutions lost places apparently because they focused only on local competition.
