The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a sister organization of the World Bank focused on investing in entities, including universities, published its case study on the Tec21 Model. The report highlights how Tecnológico de Monterrey reinvented its educational model to prepare students through integrated educational experiences to become leaders who are capable of facing current and future challenges in Mexico and the world. Through this model, the institution now offers innovative curricula that transform learning processes into spaces for interaction, collaboration, and meaningful learning.

The case study “Breaking Paradigms to Develop Leaders for the 21st Century” addresses eight topics ranging from the relevance of Rethinking the Role of Universities in the 21st Century, the challenge of Redesigning an Educational Model for a Changing World and Human Flourishing as the fundamental pillar of education, to the importance of encouraging institutions to migrate from an Industrial Education to a Personalized Education.

The document displays Tec model’s eight-year evolutionary journey, in which the institution undertook the task of consulting faculty, students, alumni, employers, companies, non-profit organizations, and approximately 35 of the world’s leading universities to learn about educational trends and best practices. Finally, in August 2019, the Tec21 Educational Model was consolidated and successfully launched for more than 13 thousand undergraduate students.

In the words of David Garza, Dean of Tec de Monterrey, “This is a model that seeks to develop personal and professional competencies, which not only prepare our students to get a job but also to create opportunities and contribute to the development of their communities throughout their lives. Beforehand, knowledge was valued most; today, it’s about what you do with that knowledge, learning to learn, and adapting rapidly to the circumstances.”

Salah-Eddine Kandri, IFC’s Global Sector Lead of Education said, “Tec de Monterrey’s ambitious initiative to overhaul its educational model provides an excellent example of how a top university can reinvent itself to remain relevant in a changing world and deliver on its mission for students in the 21st century.  With its new multidisciplinary educational model, where students take an active role in tackling real-world problems, Tec de Monterrey is igniting excitement and passion in the hearts of students, and this is generating high levels of student demand. The case study is an inspiring analysis filled with practical advice for higher education institutions around the world.”

Apart from the Educational Model, the Case Study highlights the new Tec vision towards 2030, which promotes each human being having a sense of purpose for life. Salvador Alva, President of the institution, explained that “Tec will be the first institution that is focusing on entrepreneurship for human flourishing, which we define as the continuous developing of people—the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and wellness elements—to have a positive impact on the environment and society.”

The International Finance Corporation believes that expanding access to quality education is a central element to eradicating extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity. In developing countries, private education institutions play a critical role in the delivery of education, skills, and training that is relevant and affordable. This is primordial to respond to the needs of the labor markets. IFC’s education practice is in the process of developing several case studies that showcase how diverse institutions, companies, and organizations have contributed to developing skills and enhancing employability of graduates and trainees, and increasing reach and impact at all levels of education.

The IFC 9th Global Education Conference will be held for the first time ever in Mexico and Latin America, on May 27 and 28, where the Tecnológico de Monterrey Educational Model case study will be presented within the framework of a robust program focused on disrupting, rethinking and redesigning education systems for a changing world.
