President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, announced the launch of SWAYAM, a platform which offers digital courses at school, college and university levels to deliver education to the remotest corners of the country.

The objective of this effort is to share the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. All the courses are interactive, prepared by the best teachers in the country and are available, free of cost to the residents in India.

In the initial phase, courses will be offered by Indian Institutes of Technology Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Guwahati and Delhi, the Indira Gandhi National Open University, University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Indian Institutes of Management Bangalore and Calcutta, the Indian Institute of Science, and the National Council of Educational Research and Training.

The system, Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM), allows for the transfer of college credits directly into students academic records. The courses offered are in the areas of engineering, management, science, arts, mathematics, languages, humanities, energy, sustainable development, social science, among others.

All courses delivered through SWAYAM are free, however, students wanting certifications must register and pay a fee.
