Priscilla Chan and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will be investing “hundreds of millions of dollars a year in whole-child personalized learning,” with the aim to expand the efforts to provide every student with a customized education, reports Benjamin Herold in Education Week.

The Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) wants to support the development of models and tools to help teachers better recognize and respond to each student’s academic needs.  In order to accomplish this, Chan and Zuckerberg hired James H. Shelton, former Deputy U.S. Secretary of Education.

“We’ve got to dispel this notion that personalized learning is just about technology,” Shelton said in an interview with Education Week. “In fact, it is about understanding students, giving them agency, and letting them do work that is engaging and exciting.”

Created in 2015, the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative has bet from the very beginning on the power of personalized learning to transform education. “Personalized learning can be one scalable way to give all children a better education and more equal opportunity,” reads the announcement of the creation of the CZI.

We’ll keep you posted on the advancements of this initiative.
