Tecnológico de Monterrey was again ranked as the number 1 university in Mexico and number 4 in Latin America, according to the Times Higher Education.
Tec de Monterrey was ratified as the best university in Mexico and the fourth in Latin America, according to the Times Higher Education (THE). In the sixth edition of the Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings, Tec reaffirmed its position among the country’s public and private institutions, thanks to improved results in Research, Research Citations, and International Vision.
More than 200 universities from Latin American countries, including 30 from Mexico, were evaluated this year. For this ranking, the same indicators, criteria, and rigor of THE World University Rankings were used but with different weightings to reflect the characteristics of Latin American universities.
David Garza Salazar, Rector and Executive President of Tecnologico de Monterrey, pointed out that, despite the current challenging scenario, the institution has become a pole of national and international knowledge, reflected in the type of evaluations being received. “While it is a privilege to occupy this position, we must note that it also obliges us to continue promoting the development of our educational model, which already reflects strong results,” he said. For his part, Juan Pablo Murra, Rector of Higher Education, added that Tec has consolidated its position in the rankings thanks to the contributions it has provided to society in issues related to research, science and technology.
The ranking
The Latin America Ranking brings together global performance statistics from research-intensive universities that have been assessed.
The indicators are grouped into five areas, weighted as follows:

Teaching (learning environment): 36%

Research (volume, investment, and reputation): 34%

Research citations (influence of the research): 20%
-
International vision (teachers, students, and researchers): 7.5%
-
Industry investment (technology transfer): 2.5%
The most outstanding indicators for the Institution were Research( 92.6 points), Research Citations (78.1 points), and International Vision (89.8 points).
Guillermo Torre, Rector of TecSalud and Vice President of Research at Tec, assured that the institution is committed to boosting disruptive solutions through science. “Our presence in this particular ranking is very determined by the investment that the institution has made in research issues,” Torre said. He added that research initiatives are strategic for Tec and reaffirmed within the Strategic Plan 2025. “It is important to generate strategic alliances with other entities so that, at the national level, we encourage more young people to get involved in issues related to science and technology and, thus, create a virtuous circle.”
The best universities in Latin America
Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings ranks the best universities in the Latin American and Caribbean regions. This year, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile ranks first for the third consecutive year, while the Brazilian universities of Sao Paulo and Campinas occupy second and third place, respectively. In fourth place is Tec de Monterrey, followed by Brazil’s Federal University of Minas Gerais in the fifth position.
Brazil is the most represented country in the ranking, with 67 institutions (7 of them in the Top 10), followed by Chile with 28, Colombia with 24, and Mexico with 23.
