The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has created a new laboratory to help educators, universities, governments, and companies, revolutionize the effectiveness and reach of education, through innovation.

The Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) aims “to help prepare people everywhere for a labor market radically altered by technological progress, globalization, and the pursuit of higher living standards around the world.”

Launched on May, 2017, J-WEL wants to build a global community of collaborators to transform education through research, policy, pedagogy, and practice. Acting as an incubator, the focus of the lab will be learners in the developing world, underserved populations and a growing displaced population of refugees.

The lab will divide its efforts in three interest groups:

  • pK-12 Education: to reach children at the most critical time of their lives, and to prepare them for the future.
  • Higher Education: to prepare the next generation of critical thinkers and leaders of the world. Professionals who are employable, and who can create employment.
  • Workplace Learning: to the workforce productive, engaged, and responsive to changing industries.

In an age of social and technological change, education is a critical tool for society. “Education and learning are fundamental to a strong society and economy — they promote employment and create increased opportunity for all. While there has been progress made in improving education, there is always more that can be done. Enabling individuals to do their very best and reach their full potential, whatever their background, is a key priority for Community Jameel and the world. That is exactly why we are establishing the Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab with MIT,” said Fady Mohammed Jameel, president of Community Jameel International.
