The Innovation Design and Entrepreneurship Academy (IDEA), a charter school from Dallas, is taking a different approach on discipline, focusing on repairing the harm of misconduct; it is also implementing a personalized leaning approach to education.
The Academy serves 330 students from 39 different neighborhoods of Dallas, bringing in kids from a diverse background and socioeconomic status.
In an interview with EdSurge, Courtney Egelston, IDEA’s cofounder, explains how the school implemented a restorative system of justice, which seeks to repair relationships damaged by offenders, instead of a punishing approach.
“Restorative practices is sometimes a harder sell for teachers because it’s really not easy, it is super time-consuming, but I do think that that’s key for ideas moving forward,” said Egelston.

“The push towards personalization comes from a very human approach, you cannot serve somebody if you don’t know that person,” added Egelston.
Dallas school system is one of most segregated in the United States, and now it is deploying an integration program that aims to encourage students from all ethnicities to go to school together.
