The current and potential benefit of technology in educational programs is evident. However, it is also clear the physical and mental affectation that implies the excessive use of digital devices.

A recent survey carried out by Gallup evaluated the positions of American teachers and parents regarding the use of technological devices in education and their possible impact on health. The study yielded positive results regarding education, but it exposed fear and distrust about the potential damage that the mismanagement of technology could cause.

42 % of teachers surveyed express that digital devices are useful and have positive effects on education. 30 % think they do not support much, while 28% believe that they obstruct the educational work.

Regarding health, 55% of teachers surveyed think that smartphones, tablets, and computers are bad for physical health, while 69% say they are harmful to mental health.

Contradictorily, 87% of the parents surveyed believe that the use of digital devices is positive; also, they consider that technology doesn’t have adverse effects on the health of their children.

Although this data reflects points of view, some studies support the suspicions that teachers have concerning technological dependence. For example, at the beginning of the year Apple shareholders warned about the possible mental damage in children that the excessive use of iPhone represents —based on a series of investigations.

Gallup researchers conclude that without the support of the teachers, the potential of technology wont be fully realized. The use of technology can be harmful or beneficial, although it is a fundamental part of educational programs. Teachers, parents and students need to take advantage of technology, rather than fight it.
