Tec de Monterrey is the only educational institution in Mexico that has received this distinction.
For the second year in a row, Tec de Monterrey has received the “Best Places to Work LGBTQ+ 2022” certification from HRC Equidad MX, a global labor-equity program. This program was established in Mexico in 2016 by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRCF), where more than 250 organizations with operations in Mexico appear on the list. Tec is the only educational institution in Mexico that has received this distinction.
Inés Sáenz, Vice President of Inclusion, Social Impact, and Sustainability at Tec de Monterrey said that it is a great satisfaction to know that Tec has been certified for the second time by HRC Equidad Mx. “It is the result of the priority and sincere commitment of Tecnológico de Monterrey to create a safe, inclusive and respectful community in every one of its facilities,” she affirmed.
Inés Sáenz invites Tec to continue working for equity
Sáenz extended an invitation to companies and institutions to join and continue working to create safe and inclusive spaces to work: “Workspaces that are inclusive and safe, where the dignity of all employees is respected and valued.” Likewise, Hernán García, Tec’s Vice President of Talent and Experience, recalls that since 2012, the institution has declared its commitment to the principles of equality and non-discrimination. “Since then, we have worked to align our hiring and talent processes, promoting equal opportunities and actions that result in greater equity for all our employees,” he pointed out.
“Recognizing (diversity), declaring it, and cultivating it strengthens us, adding what everyone calls ‘value:’ it is nothing more than the awareness of being with others,” said Roberto Domínguez, Associate Dean of Postgraduate Studies and member of the LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee. Roberto Domínguez also points out that part of diversity is accepting that people are changing, plural, and forming. “I am pleased that it is evident to HRC that we are a community made up of people who develop themselves in different, simultaneous, parallel, and even contrasting environments.”
The evaluation criteria of HRC Equidad Mx
Since 2015, HRC Equidad Mx has recognized the LGBTQ+ inclusion policies of companies with operations in Mexico. In 2020, Tec de Monterrey first entered the list. Companies are categorized by industry, such as aerospace, banking, financial services, culture, and universities or technological institutions. Tec de Monterrey is the only organization appearing in the latter category. This year, 65 companies were added to the list, totaling 262. Two hundred and forty-two of them obtained a score of 100% in the evaluation criteria, including Tecnológico de Monterrey.

During 2020-2021, fifteen value partners participated with Tec and received this certification. Tec accompanied and advised some during the process. Some certified companies and institutions shared their experiences and best practices to guide interested companies.
In the HRC Equidad Mx Annual Report, the work of JP Morgan, Softtek, and Experts Environmental Consultants, among others, were recognized with Tec de Monterrey. Also, Zinia Padilla, the Director of Institutional Culture, and Karla Elizabeth Urriola, Director of the National Office of Gender and Safe Community, are on the HRC Equidad Mx 2021 Business Advisory Council. “With this year’s results, it is possible to bring together and make visible the group of companies with the greatest advances in the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in Mexico. It is these companies that will be able to guide and impact the advance of inclusion in workplaces and, therefore, our society,” said Francisco Robledo, the implementing partner of HRC Equidad Mx.
This effort can be seen in the launch of the Report on Diversity and Inclusion, which describes Tec’s actions in its process to become increasingly inclusive.
