David Garza, current rector of the university, will be the new President of Tecnológico de Monterrey, replacing Salvador Alva, beginning July 1, announced José Antonio Fernández, President of the Board of Directors of the university.

Through a message addressed to the Tec Community, Fernández expressed that this is a well-planned succession. He recognized the work of the current President, Salvador Alva, emphasizing that Alva led a “transformation that boosted the academic quality of Tec, positioning the university as a leading institution in the world.” He noted that David Garza, for his part, is a “very well established, loved, and respected manager […], the protagonist of the design and execution of the new Tec21 Educational Model.”

The official message shared with the Tec Community:

January 10, 2020

Dear Tec Community,

“No hay tiempo que no llegue y plazo que no se cumpla” is a popular saying in that I quote here to inform you that, effective July 1, 2020, David Garza Salazar will assume the position of President of Tecnólogico de Monterrey, replacing Salvador Alva, who will be retiring after eight years of a major transformation that boosted the academic quality of Tec de Monterrey, positioning us as a leading institution in educational innovation and leading our ascent in the international rankings. Also, as you know, Tecmilenio University is positioned as the world’s first “positive university,” and TecSalud is an innovative academic medical system oriented to change health practices.

This is a succession planned for years as part of our process of institutional governance by our Board and by Salvador himself. We designed it to ensure the continuity of our Strategic Plan toward 2030, renewing our commitment to a decade that promises enormous challenges and opportunities.

Salvador was the engine behind a great transformation generated 76 years ago that potentiated the original vocation of our founders. His vision, leadership, and courage to do what few would do in the environment of educational institutions is a tribute to the entrepreneurial and humanistic view of Don Eugenio Garza Sada.

For his part, David is the ideal baton, being a well-established director, loved and respected in our Institution, which he joined in 1985. Today he is a key member of the management team, and, as you know, he was the protagonist of the design and execution of the new Tec21 Educational Model. During his more than 34 years at Tec, David has held diverse academic and managerial positions; specifically, Research and Postgraduate Director, Dean of Information and Electronic Technologies, General Director of the San Luis Potosí Campus, Rector of the Metropolitan Zone of Monterrey and Vice-Rector of Undergraduate Education, focused on improving the quality of students and teachers; he was subsequently appointed Academic Vice-Rector of the Institution, and, since July 2017, he has served as Rector of the Tecnologico de Monterrey.

During the first semester of 2020 and through July 1, Salvador will continue to lead the Institution, working with David and our committed leadership team to ensure a successful transition while maintaining a focus on short-term goals, consolidating the new educational model, and preparing the organization to pursue the new dream that we have shaped in the Strategic Plan 2030.

I ask you to join us in congratulating David on this designation, as well as his wife Claudia and their four children, Claudia Marcela, Alejandro Daniel, Andrés Fernando, and Sara Elisa.

José Antonio Fernández Carbajal
President of the Board of Directors

“For me, it has been a privilege.”

Meanwhile, through his official Facebook account, Salvador Alva expressed his gratitude for the transformation he has been able to lead at Tec de Monterrey. “I am very excited because the moment has arrived to take the step of transition in the role that I have been occupying at Tec. For me, it has been a privilege for eight years to be at the helm of this institution of wonderful people committed to educational innovation,” he expressed.

Juan Pablo Murra, Vice President of Tec Relations and Development, an area in charge of the relationship with exalumni and graduates of the Institution, also issued a message to the EXATEC community:

“We share the confidence of the Board that, driven by David’s leadership and with the support of the whole community, we will be able to consolidate the important advances in progress made in the transformation of our institution […] I invite you to join me in celebrating and congratulating David for this important responsibility that he assumes today.”
