The virus WannaCry has infected hundreds of thousands of computers since Friday in more than 150 countries.
The ransomware infects computers with Windows, encrypts information and then asks for a $300 payment to release the files.
Universities, hospitals and hundreds of companies, such as Fedex and Telefónica, have been targeted.
Although the attacks have slowed, experts have made a number of recommendations in order to avoid being infected by WannaCry.
- Do not pay the ransom. It is highly unlikely that your files will be released even if you make the payment
- Update your operating system (especially if you use Windows)
- Update your antivirus
- Do not open suspicious links or attachments in your emails
- Do not open emails marked as spam
- Avoid visiting and downloading files from suspicious sites
- Back up your information frequently
- Check your bank statements to verify that your information has not been misused
