MIT announced an investment of a billion dollars in Artificial Intelligence (IA) education, and the launch of the Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing; institute dedicated to AI sponsored by the CEO of Blackstone.
This new College will be an interdisciplinary center for research and development in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and related fields.
One of the objectives of the Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing is to bring the practice of computing and AI to all fields of study at MIT. Also, it will aim to educate students of all disciplines to use and develop information and computing technologies responsibly and ethically.
This initiative represents the most significant investment in Artificial Intelligence education and computing that an American academic institution has made. According to the MIT statement, this university will help the United States establish itself as a leader in preparing students for emerging technologies.
In this regard, the president of MIT, L. Rafael Reif, stated: "As computing reshapes our world, MIT intends to help make sure it does so for the good of all. (…) The College will equip students and researchers in any discipline to use computing and AI to advance their disciplines and vice-versa, as well as to think critically about the human impact of their work.”
The Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing will open in September 2019, and the construction of its building will be finished by 2022.
